For young Australian girls, go-karting can be an exciting entry point into motorsport, but the pathway is not always easy. 

Families often need to manage the cost of equipment, maintenance, travel, race fees and ongoing training, which can make it difficult for many young drivers to stay involved.

Representation is another challenge. Motorsport has traditionally been male-dominated, and many girls do not always see a clear pathway for themselves in the sport. This can lead to young female drivers being underestimated, overlooked or unsure whether they truly belong.

That is why visibility matters. When young girls see other girls racing, learning and competing, it helps shift expectations and shows that motorsport is a place where talent, focus and commitment should matter more than gender.

Across Australia, programs such as FIA Girls on Track – Australia, Girls Race Too and Karting Australia’s women and girls initiatives are helping more young females enter motorsport. These programs support participation through come-and-try days, mentoring, club-level racing, development pathways and opportunities beyond driving, including engineering, media, coaching and official roles.
